NHL – The October Surprise(s)

Filed under: NHL/Ice Hockey, Spark Of Life Sports — AlMac @ 7:07 am

After a summer of doubts and an entire nation of people having to reduce themselves to 2nd class entertainment. The NHL has finally started up again. As always the early fall and the beginning of the season always comes with a load of surprises, though it is hard to say if anyone could have predicted what the league has seen in the past few weeks.
It was easy to say that in Leaf’s nation the biggest surprise game on opening night when the Buds ‘spoiled the party’ so to speak in Detroit, beating the Wings 3-2 in Detroit’s banner raising home opener. Though it was quickly under achieved after a 6-1 shellacking by Montreal the fallowing Saturday and a 5-4 Shootout loss to the Blues most recently. The leafs are a young team and though they show some character at times, they are still a ways away from being very competitive. They have speed up the middle which they were missing last year and some of their mid-aged veterans may finally be taking the next step into the leader role this team desperately deserves. Either way Leafs’ fans are going to have to wait a few more years to see the glory come ‘home’

While just a few hours east of the 401 an other Canadian team is gearing up for what could be their most successful campaign to date, not to mention their 100th season. The Montreal Canadiens unveiled their ‘Ring Of Honor’ at their home opening win against Boston on Wednesday and with that the ‘Habs’ showed poise making their first few strides to what looks to be an exciting season.

What should come with no surprise is the return of persistence in Alexie Kovalev. His magic, almost better then last year was evident during their home opener. The magic could be seen most notably in the first period when Kovalev had great hands down low and converted his chance into a goal (assisted by Plekanec & Markov) (PP)

These are only signs of what is yet to come in Montreal. Could this be the year ? 100th Season, 25th cup ? It almost seems poetic.

Another strong looking franchise above the 49th is the Edmonton Oilers. Only playing 2 games into the season it is tough to judge what this team is capable of, but not forgetting about their miracle run in 2005, the Oilers may be set to make a deep run into the post-season with a fresh batch of new and otherwise prized talent. While season vets like Hemsky and Horcoff still lead the 1st line, the 2nd line is made up of two sophomore phenoms by the names of Cogliano and Gagner. The oil show more depth then they have in years and with the right leadership (Sheldon Souray) the Oilers may be able to make up for their 2005 failure.

What this season is looking like it may be about is the ‘every day superstar’ style of entertainment that is the NHL. Meaning that some times 3rd and 4th liners may end up in the highlight reel. Take for instance Fabian Brunnstrom. On Wednesday October 15th, Brunnstrom became apart of NHL history playing in his first game and scoring 3 goals within 14minutes becoming only the 3rd NHL player in history to score 3 goals in their first game. Fabian is a free-agent rookie from Sweden who is most famous for his You-Tube highlight reel videos that have taken Scandinavia by storm.

The Canadian Press, TSN)

One of the more unpleasant surprises was the passing of Alexie CHEREPANOV. The cause of his death was still under investigation, federal investigators said Wednesday. A first-round draft pick for the New York Rangers, Cherepanov collapsed on the bench during a game Monday outside Moscow.

“It is hard to evaluate today the depth of the loss felt by the family of Alexei, Russian sport, and the Avangard team,” said Leonid Polezhayev, the governor of the Omsk region, in comments to Russian agency Regnum.

“Alexei Cherepanov wasn’t only a talented athlete and a reliable comrade, he was an idol of modern youth.”

Moscow regional investigators said Cherepanov apparently had chronic ischemia – a medical condition that means not enough blood gets to the heart or other organs. They have raised questions as to why the condition went undetected.

It has been reported that negligence of the EMS crew may have been a factor in the death of Cherepanov. What is most evident that heart safety equipment should always be properly maintained at arena’s around the world and that life, even when feeling most invincible. Is still very, very fragile.

THROUGH THE NOISE TOUR ’08 – COMEBACK KID w/ Bane, Misery Signals, Shai Hulud, Outbreak, Grave Maker

Filed under: Clubs/Venues, Events, Hardcore, Punk, Spark Of Life Music — AlMac @ 6:09 am

The hardcore tour of the year, featuring some of the most influencial hardcore bands of today and yesterday. This tour will be coming to Toronto, Ontario on Oct 24th (the same day as Crystal Castles @ CIRCA :S) At the Opera House on Queen East.

outbreak,a pissed snotty hardcore band with solid drumming, a bit of which is New York hardcore influenced. This band hails from Maine and if you’ve heard Dropkick Murphys, Blood For Blood, or American Nightmare before you will love this band.

Bane, a hardcore punk band, began as a side project of Aaron Dalbec (then of Converge) in 1995 and never turned back since. Founded on beliefs that are in short supply within the current underground music scene, Bane has established themselves as one of the most influential and relevant bands in hardcore today. Since their inception, they’ve become one of the scene’s hardest working bands touring the world over and releasing the full lengths, It All Comes Down To This and 2001’s critically acclaimed Give Blood, an album that breathed life into the then-stagnant hardcore scene. Returning with their first album in three years, Bane offer up The Note – an album that embodies the spirit, the community, and the love of traditional hardcore that Bane has become synonymous with. In stark contrast with many of its contemporaries The Note is not laden with trends but with powerful, energetic and passionate performances that serve as a wake up call for modern day hardcore. Bane’s newest album has been one of the best yet and they have not lost their touch. The live performance has been remembered as filled with energy and people will remember this night for a long time.

Misery Signals the Canadian/US group from Edmonton, Regina & Madison will also grace the stage on that friday evening. Misery Signals has always seemed to leave their fans in Ontario speechless after performances. As early as 2004 Misery Signals has been a leading force in the Hardcore scene and after a line-up change, acquiring one Karl Schubach from Regina as their new Vocalist, Misery Signals is better then ever before just out of the studio, on the road plugin’ their new record Controller.
Controller is the band’s third full-length album and is expecting to set a new watermark in the band’s career. It is a high mark to aim for as the band’s last full-length Mirrors (2006) received a deluge of critical acclaim and fan praise. Among those well wishers were Alternative Press who featured the band as 100 BANDS YOU NEED TO KNOW 2007 (and 2008, 2009, ect) which yielded the quote “Let’s face it: A lot of metal-roar-core acts don’t mix in Sigur Ros-esque ambient breaks within the kind of gut-wrenching boom you’ll find on the Signals’ recent disc, Mirrors.” Revolver who featured Misery Signals as a BAND TO WATCH described the band as “A relentlessly ambitious melodic, metalcore band with a knack for exhausting members with their take-no-prisoners touring schedule.” Speaking of that non-stop touring schedule the band have hit over five countries in the past several months including a headlining tour of Europe, festivals in Japan and Australia with I Killed The Prom Queen as well as slots supporting As I Lay Dying on North American and Canadian dates. The band has been popular touring partners with bands across the heavy spectrum, hitting the road with such acts as Dillinger Escape Plan, Bleeding Through, Norma Jean, All That Remains, Emmure, The Chariot, Darkest Hour, Dead to Fall and Between The Buried And Me. Misery Signals will bring the low end and there is no-doubt people will get their money’s worth.

Comeback Kid All great things have humble beginnings and Comeback Kid is no exception. Originating in 2002 as a way to get out some fast, energetic music, CBK has since turned into one of the most infectious forces in independent music today. 5 Young men from Winnipeg, Canada and of former groups such as Figure Four and No Warning. Comeback Kid has intense ‘in your face style’ live performance. It will be remembered.

Shai Hulud is a American five-piece technical hardcore punk band with progressive metal[1] influences, originally formed in Pompano Beach, Florida, the band later moved up to Poughkeepsie, NY. The name comes from the giant sandworms in Frank Herbert’s Dune. The two mainstay members of Shai Hulud are considered to be Matt Fox (guitar), who writes most of the band’s musical and lyrical output, and Matt Fletcher (originally guitar, but then moved on to bass), who assists in writing Shai Hulud was one of the first bands to be considered “metalcore”, in the 90s. They have played metal influenced hardcore long before “metalcore” was even considered a musical genre, but their music isn’t what is known as metalcore nowadays, since their complete lack of modern metalcore elements, staying more close to their hardcore roots. This will be Shai Hulud’s second time in Toronto since reforming as a band and it could very well be their last. Come give these guys some love.

In the Mirror Ballroom:

MEGASOID (AKA Sixtoo & Hadji Bakara of Wolf Parade, Turbo Crunk, MTL)

with SEK ONE (Curb Crawlers)

and DOUGIE BOOM (DMoney)

Megasoid was born out of the ashes of a burnt-up modular synth borrowed in a coffee line, followed by a summer of mobile partying in a shitty van with a DIY Mojito stand that produced: 1) a drank-soaked machinedrum (RIP), 2) some mangled computers (RIP) and 3) a pair of dudes with intrinsic talent / chemistry / lust for making dirty street-bass remixes.

Comprised of Robert “Speakerbruiser” Squire (ex-Sixtoo/ Sebutones/ 1200hobos) and Hadji “Robert Downey DJ” Bakara (the electronics contingent of Wolf Parade), this notorious Montreal duo has been smashing the local population with their brand of rap-influenced big-synth remix music, leaving a trail of bruised PAs and broken beer glasses in its path. Megasoid remixes and mixtapes have garnished serious attention and praise from highbrow music critics and reputable DJs alike, while their illegal parties are legendary. Google it.

While promoting for / remixing for / working exclusively with an A-list of taste-maker producers and rappers from Europe and North America, Megasoid has put the Northeast on smashmode, making their nights a home for producer friends worldwide. Their leaked tracks and remixes have built a serious anticipation for their first album now in the works. In the meanwhile, expect some of their legit remix work to surface before the album’s release on Ninja Tune.

“I played this remix so many times that I eventually listed it as my favorite song of 2007.” – Sasha Frere Jones (The New Yorker) talking about Megasoid’s “No More Blood” remix for Ghislain Poirier.

Moving from street/loft parties where they cut their gold-fronts to large capacity clubs (which they’ve occasionally been known to get kicked out of), Megasoid’s Turbo Crunk parties in Toronto and Montreal have quickly become one of the livest and most notorious franchises in North America. In turn, Montreal has become one of the few cities with a legit scene for street-bass music.

The list of people who have appeared/will appear alongside Megasoid is starting to read like a “Who’s Who” of top-shelf producers and DJs: GlitchMob (edIT and Boretta), Lucky Me (Hudmo, Rustie, Mike Slott and Dom Sum), Ed Banger (Medhi, Busy P), Dj Assault, DJ Funk, Holy Fuck, South Rakkas Crew, Machinedrum, Deadbeat, Lorn, Mofomatronix, Lunice, Blingmod, Daedelus, Nosaj Thing, Big Toe’s HiFi, 215, Mouse on Mars, Thunderheist, The Cool Kids, Jokers of the Scene, Bonjay, PeerPressue, Kid Koala, KnifeHandChop and Modeselektor. Just to name a few.
Start child-proofing the furniture. The dudes like to do it big.

Justice - Oct 29th @ Circa

For those who don’t know, and we don’t suppose there are many of those, Justice, a Parisian dance production duo comprised of Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay, generated an international buzz with “D.A.N.C.E.,” a catchy single whose video and MP3 spread like wildfire across the Internet in summer 2007. Before “D.A.N.C.E.” became an online sensation, Justice had released a couple singles (“Never Be Alone,” “Waters of Nazareth”) on Ed Banger Records, a Parisian dance label whose roster also includes DJ Mehdi, Mr. Flash, and Uffie. “Never Be Alone” (aka “We Are Your Friends”) is particularly notable; based upon vocal samples from “Never Be Alone” by the British band Simian, the song was licensed in 2004 by International Deejay Gigolo Records, a German techno label helmed by DJ Hell, and consequently became popular in England and Germany, in addition to France. Augé and de Rosnay were prolific remixers as well, with high-profile credits including N.E.R.D.’s “She Wants to Move” (2004), Britney Spears’ “Me Against the Music” (2005), Death from Above 1979’s “Blood on Our Hands” (2005), Fatboy Slim’s “Don’t Let the Man” (2005), Daft Punk’s “Human After All” (2005), Soulwax’s “NY Excuse” (2005), Franz Ferdinand’s “The Fallen” (2006), and Mr. Oizo’s “Nazis” (2006). The sensational popularity of “D.A.N.C.E.” in summer 2007 was driven initially by trend-setting Internet bloggers, who were quick to champion the song, in particular its video, which featured animated T-shirts. Vice Records helped fan the flames, posting numerous MP3 remixes — for free download on its blog. All of the Internet activity set the stage perfectly for Justice’s debut full-length, † (aka Cross).

9/11 & Christian Extreamists

Filed under: Uncategorized — AlMac @ 1:33 pm

Todd Beamer and his wife attended Wheaton College, Wheaton is a Private Evangelical Protestant college. Beamer was known to be a ‘devout’ Christian. “On board Beamer called a GTE Airfone operator about the hijacking, recited the Lord’s Prayer, and said, “Let’s roll.’ source
In the same article it explains that “Jefferson could hear shouts and commotion and then Beamer asked her to pray with him. They recited the 23rd Psalm.” Todd Beamer taught a high school Sunday school class, and Lisa Beamer was on the church’s governing board.

Todd & Lisa Beamer spent their last days together in Rome.

The Lisa Beamer story made 9/11 seem very ‘real’ and ‘brought the terror’ to home so to speak. Lisa, five months pregnant, into the national spotlight with interviews on Larry King Live, PrimeTime Live, and Good Morning America, among others. Her photo appeared in magazines ranging from People to the National Enquirer. And President George W. Bush even introduced Lisa to a devastated nation during his address before Congress on September 20. Lisa now speaks regularly at Women of Faith conferences. Lisa said in an interview after 9/11 that ‘Todd and I knew it was important to try to live life faithfully for Christ each day. Now I have a greater awareness of how important it is to have that minute-by-minute trust in God.’ Lisa and Todd Beamer were both devout Christians.

David Beamer, Todd’s father is a supporter of the war on terror and the face on Progress for America (PFA) television commercials. Progress for America is a major political fund-raising and marketing group that supports conservative issues and candidates. Republican political consulting firm DCI Group, which also helped run the anti-Kerry campaign of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, is also closely involved with Progress for America. Progress For America lobby’s for clients such as AT&T,Coca-Cola,Exxon Mobil, General Motors Corporation,Google,Intel,McDonalds and Microsoft. DCI’s Chairman Tom Synhorst worked on George Walker Bush’s Texas gubernatorial campaign, as well as campaigns for Governor Mike Huckabee. Synhorst has often been link to Ralph Reed, Reed is a conservative American political activist, best known as the first executive director of the Christian Coalition during the early 1990s. Reed attended Emory University – a private United Methodist school.

Tony Feather co-founder of DCI and Progress For America, served as political director for Bush/Cheney in 2000. You see the pieces starting to take shape here ? According to SourceWatch, “the PFA was, from the beginning, ‘closely associated’ with the Bush administration, the Republican National Committee and ‘their consultants.’ PFA was established in 2001 to support George W. Bush’s ‘agenda for America.’ The PFA Voter Fund, which was set up in 2004, raised $38 million in support of Bush’s 2004 election bid.” One of the most prominent names affiliated with PFA is C. Boyden Gray, a major Republican power broker.

One of David Beamer’s stated objectives was to “share and discuss a most important issue of our time, World War III, which is underway.” source Todd’s father, in cooperation with Emmanuel School of Religion in Johnson City created the Todd Beamer Fund. Emmanuel School of Religion was founded in 1965 in conjunction with Milligan College, to which it maintains a close relationship. Milligan College is affiliated with the Christian Churches/Churches of Christ, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and the Churches of Christ. The student body is roughly 120 students, mostly pursuing masters degrees, and mostly coming from the Christian Churches and Churches of Christ, though an increasing number of Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Baptist, and United Methodist students have studied there in recent years. source

Lisa Jefferson, the Verizon phone operator who ‘listened as the tragedy in the air unfolded.’ and heard ‘men crying and screaming, ‘Oh, my God. Jesus help us. has a story that lives on to this day, people don’t seem to care that it has been proven that these phone calls could not have taken place, but that’s a whole other story.

Speak of stories, Jefferson details that phone call, and how ‘God has allowed her to use her recollections of the events of that day as a witnessing tool in a book titled Called (Northfield Publishers, 2006). One of the messages of the book, she explains, is that believers must be available and prepared for the time when they may be called upon to live out their faith in some unexpected way.

“God has an assignment for you that only you can fulfill,” the author asserts. “God put me in the role of being an ‘ear witness’ to the bravery of the men and women on Flight 93,” she says, “and the reason I wrote Called is because I believe any one of us can find ourselves in a similar situation, where we may be called upon to do something extraordinary when we least expect it.” source

Tom Burnett died at age 38 in the September 11, 2001 attacks on board United Airlines Flight 93 and was apart of the ‘heroic’ ‘lets roll’ struggle. Burnett attended Saint John’s University, a private Roman Catholic school. Burnett also got his MBA at Pepperdine University, Pepperdrine is a private University of higher learning affiliated with the Churches of Christ. Deena Burnett, Tom’s widow claims she had four cell-phone conversations with Tom during the hijacked flight. Burnett was senior vice president at Thoratec Corporation a company best known for their work in the ‘organ business’
