THROUGH THE NOISE TOUR ’08 – COMEBACK KID w/ Bane, Misery Signals, Shai Hulud, Outbreak, Grave Maker

The hardcore tour of the year, featuring some of the most influencial hardcore bands of today and yesterday. This tour will be coming to Toronto, Ontario on Oct 24th (the same day as Crystal Castles @ CIRCA :S) At the Opera House on Queen East.

outbreak,a pissed snotty hardcore band with solid drumming, a bit of which is New York hardcore influenced. This band hails from Maine and if you’ve heard Dropkick Murphys, Blood For Blood, or American Nightmare before you will love this band.

Bane, a hardcore punk band, began as a side project of Aaron Dalbec (then of Converge) in 1995 and never turned back since. Founded on beliefs that are in short supply within the current underground music scene, Bane has established themselves as one of the most influential and relevant bands in hardcore today. Since their inception, they’ve become one of the scene’s hardest working bands touring the world over and releasing the full lengths, It All Comes Down To This and 2001’s critically acclaimed Give Blood, an album that breathed life into the then-stagnant hardcore scene. Returning with their first album in three years, Bane offer up The Note – an album that embodies the spirit, the community, and the love of traditional hardcore that Bane has become synonymous with. In stark contrast with many of its contemporaries The Note is not laden with trends but with powerful, energetic and passionate performances that serve as a wake up call for modern day hardcore. Bane’s newest album has been one of the best yet and they have not lost their touch. The live performance has been remembered as filled with energy and people will remember this night for a long time.

Misery Signals the Canadian/US group from Edmonton, Regina & Madison will also grace the stage on that friday evening. Misery Signals has always seemed to leave their fans in Ontario speechless after performances. As early as 2004 Misery Signals has been a leading force in the Hardcore scene and after a line-up change, acquiring one Karl Schubach from Regina as their new Vocalist, Misery Signals is better then ever before just out of the studio, on the road plugin’ their new record Controller.
Controller is the band’s third full-length album and is expecting to set a new watermark in the band’s career. It is a high mark to aim for as the band’s last full-length Mirrors (2006) received a deluge of critical acclaim and fan praise. Among those well wishers were Alternative Press who featured the band as 100 BANDS YOU NEED TO KNOW 2007 (and 2008, 2009, ect) which yielded the quote “Let’s face it: A lot of metal-roar-core acts don’t mix in Sigur Ros-esque ambient breaks within the kind of gut-wrenching boom you’ll find on the Signals’ recent disc, Mirrors.” Revolver who featured Misery Signals as a BAND TO WATCH described the band as “A relentlessly ambitious melodic, metalcore band with a knack for exhausting members with their take-no-prisoners touring schedule.” Speaking of that non-stop touring schedule the band have hit over five countries in the past several months including a headlining tour of Europe, festivals in Japan and Australia with I Killed The Prom Queen as well as slots supporting As I Lay Dying on North American and Canadian dates. The band has been popular touring partners with bands across the heavy spectrum, hitting the road with such acts as Dillinger Escape Plan, Bleeding Through, Norma Jean, All That Remains, Emmure, The Chariot, Darkest Hour, Dead to Fall and Between The Buried And Me. Misery Signals will bring the low end and there is no-doubt people will get their money’s worth.

Comeback Kid All great things have humble beginnings and Comeback Kid is no exception. Originating in 2002 as a way to get out some fast, energetic music, CBK has since turned into one of the most infectious forces in independent music today. 5 Young men from Winnipeg, Canada and of former groups such as Figure Four and No Warning. Comeback Kid has intense ‘in your face style’ live performance. It will be remembered.

Shai Hulud is a American five-piece technical hardcore punk band with progressive metal[1] influences, originally formed in Pompano Beach, Florida, the band later moved up to Poughkeepsie, NY. The name comes from the giant sandworms in Frank Herbert’s Dune. The two mainstay members of Shai Hulud are considered to be Matt Fox (guitar), who writes most of the band’s musical and lyrical output, and Matt Fletcher (originally guitar, but then moved on to bass), who assists in writing Shai Hulud was one of the first bands to be considered “metalcore”, in the 90s. They have played metal influenced hardcore long before “metalcore” was even considered a musical genre, but their music isn’t what is known as metalcore nowadays, since their complete lack of modern metalcore elements, staying more close to their hardcore roots. This will be Shai Hulud’s second time in Toronto since reforming as a band and it could very well be their last. Come give these guys some love.

Megasoid was born out of the ashes of a burnt-up modular synth borrowed in a coffee line, followed by a summer of mobile partying in a shitty van with a DIY Mojito stand that produced: 1) a drank-soaked machinedrum (RIP), 2) some mangled computers (RIP) and 3) a pair of dudes with intrinsic talent / chemistry / lust for making dirty street-bass remixes.

Comprised of Robert “Speakerbruiser” Squire (ex-Sixtoo/ Sebutones/ 1200hobos) and Hadji “Robert Downey DJ” Bakara (the electronics contingent of Wolf Parade), this notorious Montreal duo has been smashing the local population with their brand of rap-influenced big-synth remix music, leaving a trail of bruised PAs and broken beer glasses in its path. Megasoid remixes and mixtapes have garnished serious attention and praise from highbrow music critics and reputable DJs alike, while their illegal parties are legendary. Google it.

While promoting for / remixing for / working exclusively with an A-list of taste-maker producers and rappers from Europe and North America, Megasoid has put the Northeast on smashmode, making their nights a home for producer friends worldwide. Their leaked tracks and remixes have built a serious anticipation for their first album now in the works. In the meanwhile, expect some of their legit remix work to surface before the album’s release on Ninja Tune.

Moving from street/loft parties where they cut their gold-fronts to large capacity clubs (which they’ve occasionally been known to get kicked out of), Megasoid’s Turbo Crunk parties in Toronto and Montreal have quickly become one of the livest and most notorious franchises in North America. In turn, Montreal has become one of the few cities with a legit scene for street-bass music.

The list of people who have appeared/will appear alongside Megasoid is starting to read like a “Who’s Who” of top-shelf producers and DJs: GlitchMob (edIT and Boretta), Lucky Me (Hudmo, Rustie, Mike Slott and Dom Sum), Ed Banger (Medhi, Busy P), Dj Assault, DJ Funk, Holy Fuck, South Rakkas Crew, Machinedrum, Deadbeat, Lorn, Mofomatronix, Lunice, Blingmod, Daedelus, Nosaj Thing, Big Toe’s HiFi, 215, Mouse on Mars, Thunderheist, The Cool Kids, Jokers of the Scene, Bonjay, PeerPressue, Kid Koala, KnifeHandChop and Modeselektor. For those who don’t know, and we don’t suppose there are many of those, Justice, a Parisian dance production duo comprised of Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay, generated an international buzz with “D.A.N.C.E.,” a catchy single whose video and MP3 spread like wildfire across the Internet in summer 2007. Before “D.A.N.C.E.” became an online sensation, Justice had released a couple singles (“Never Be Alone,” “Waters of Nazareth”) on Ed Banger Records, a Parisian dance label whose roster also includes DJ Mehdi, Mr. Flash, and Uffie. “Never Be Alone” (aka “We Are Your Friends”) is particularly notable; based upon vocal samples from “Never Be Alone” by the British band Simian, the song was licensed in 2004 by International Deejay Gigolo Records, a German techno label helmed by DJ Hell, and consequently became popular in England and Germany, in addition to France. Augé and de Rosnay were prolific remixers as well, with high-profile credits including N.E.R.D.’s “She Wants to Move” (2004), Britney Spears’ “Me Against the Music” (2005), Death from Above 1979’s “Blood on Our Hands” (2005), Fatboy Slim’s “Don’t Let the Man” (2005), Daft Punk’s “Human After All” (2005), Soulwax’s “NY Excuse” (2005), Franz Ferdinand’s “The Fallen” (2006), and Mr. Oizo’s “Nazis” (2006). The sensational popularity of “D.A.N.C.E.” in summer 2007 was driven initially by trend-setting Internet bloggers, who were quick to champion the song, in particular its video, which featured animated T-shirts. Vice Records helped fan the flames, posting numerous MP3 remixes — for free download on its blog. All of the Internet activity set the stage perfectly for Justice’s debut full-length, † (aka Cross).

A brief moment with ‘Fear Before The March Of Flames’

After spending a few days with Fear Before the March of Flames, I’ve found a new respect for them. Seeing them play various shows in different settings with different set list really show cases their talent and ability to play to any crowd. From mocking the people in their tents at this years CEMF, to tearing apart the Annex Wreckroom with an unbelievable set, the boys of FBTMOF get it done no matter the situation. Jumping off the stage and trying to intimidate people who seem to be taken back by his on stage person Dave Marion talks to me about Canada, the new album and getting hit in the face with guitars;

SOL: You guys have been in Canada for a while now, what’s one good thing and one bad thing you’ve experienced here?

Dave Marion: Tons of good things thats for sure, probably the best I’d say is just getting to see new places. You kinda get burned out in the States after you’ve seen it all over and over and over again, it’s always fun, but just getting to see a new place, parts of the country we haven’t seen before. The bugs suck though, we’ve been camping or staying in the van and the last little while has been pretty bad.

SOL: Adam is a vegan, how hard is it to find food for him in Canada?

DM: It’s hard sometimes, but he gets by pretty well. He’s a little picky on what he eats, but, I’ll eat anything. It’s kinda hard when we get to a place that doesn’t have food for him, I feel a little bad for him because I can enjoy any meal. It seems rough at times, I know I couldn’t do it.

SOL: You’ve said previously that you like when fans get involved in your shows,
how do you cope at festival shows where security is amped up and fan interaction becomes much harder?

DM:
You kind just go into it knowing it’s going to be like that, you have to translate your energy in different ways. I’m not so good at talking to the crowd, and I find it’s hard to find the right words to say, I figure the songs speak better. I feel there’s something special about festival shows and getting in front of that many people is like a different high all by itself.

SOL: Your lyrics are really intricate, harboring allegories, metaphors, hidden meanings, do you intend on creating these or do they just come as you’re writing?

DM:
Sometimes they start as journal entries, on the new record I kept more personal than the allegories. I just find with those kind of things they can reach more people and doesn’t have to mean the same thing for every person, people will find their own meaning.

SOL: You use Disney movies in brutal metaphors, what’s with that?

DM: Those movies are pretty fucked up, when you are a little kid you dont notice the subtleties of it. I try and remind people that everything you see is not always correct.

SOL: Jeremy Fisher and Anthony Green make an apperance on the last album, is there any cameos on the new album?

DM: Quintin from Vox, Thomas from Fall of Troy, Drew from I Am the Ocean, I think thats it. We try and involve other bands in stuff as much as we can.

SOL: What is the direction of the new album compared to The Always Open Mouth?

DM: It still sounds like us, it’s really dark, it has the energy that Art Damage had. On the last album, some of the songs were electronic based, we started with the electronics and built them up from there, this time, we wrote the songs and wrote the electronics to that. It’s so much different for us, because we’ve got a new drummer and a fresh lineup, it feels like a first record again,
you’re excited and you know everyone else is. I can’t wait for people to hear it.

Q: Brandon Proff used to do your layouts, now that hes no longer part of the band have you gone somewhere else?

DM:
David Bell, the director of the “Taking Cassandra to the End of the World Party” video is doing the artwork, every time he comes out he brings his sketchbook and it’s just Amazing. Brandon is still going to do the layout, he still does some of our merch designs…He always seems to be doing something new.

SOL: Whats the weirdest thing thats ever happened on tour?

DM: This one time, I got my head split open by Mike’s bass and I had a bunch of paper towels to wipe it up with. When I got cleaned up, I put them down by the monitor and this girl picked them up and put them in her purse….and that’s just strange haha… I’ve been hit a lot of times, I’ve got artificial dimples from being hit in the face…but at least I’ve got my eyeballs…
